# Using a hotspot

> What the app does when you find a hotspot you want to use.

Once you find a hotspot on the map, the app helps you review it and decide whether to
use it.

<Info>
  The app is invitation-only beta. This page describes the current build.
</Info>

## Finding a hotspot

From the **Map** tab:

1. Browse or search for hotspots in an area
2. Tap a marker to open its details
3. Review the network type, signal, security, speed, rating, and the contributor's note

## Reviewing before you connect

The detail view gives you what you need to decide:

* **Network type**: Wi-Fi, mobile data, or router
* **Signal**: how strong the connection is likely to be
* **Security**: how the network is protected (for example WPA2 or WPA3)
* **Note**: any instructions the contributor left, such as where to find the password

## Connecting

<Note>
  In the current beta, the app does **not** join Wi-Fi networks for you. Use the details
  and the contributor's note to connect through your device's normal Wi-Fi settings.
  Automatic, in-app connection is on the roadmap — see
  [Product status](/docs/introduction/status).
</Note>

## Staying safe on shared networks

A Linkr hotspot is like any network you do not control:

* Prefer HTTPS sites for anything sensitive
* Consider a VPN for additional privacy
* Pay attention to the security field — an **Open** network has no encryption

## Reporting problems

If a hotspot's details do not match reality, let us know at
[support@linkrmap.com](mailto:support@linkrmap.com) so the dataset can be corrected.
